Cleveland Divestment Project Meeting

Cleveland Divestment Project Meeting

Energy Transfer Partners (ETP) is a company with a long history of constructing fossil fuel pipelines.  One of its most famous projects was also one of the most infamous, and that was the DAPL pipeline that the Standing Rock Sioux and many other Native American Tribes fought throughout 2016 until Barrack Obama suspended the project, which then – to the surprise of no one, was reinstated by the Trump administration.

The Standing Rock Sioux and its allies were fighting to protect the Missouri River watershed which is a crucial source of water for their reservation.

Now the Energy Transfer Partners is busy in Ohio where they have accumulated a great number of citations for violations of the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts while building the Rover pipeline, which is a crucial infrastructure project for the development of fracking in Ohio.
Construction of the project has already resulted in a drilling fluid spill which has destroyed one wetland in Stark County, and the City of Canton having to monitor its water wells for fear that the Rover pipeline may jeopardize the potability of the wells.  The increase in fracking that Rover will encourage also jeopardizes the future integrity of the Wayne National Forest.
Unfortunately, the pipeline and fracking companies have done their homework and have removed practically all avenues that individuals and communities have to fight such projects through regulatory laws and agencies.  From the well head to the pipeline it is a green light all the way.  Especially since the advent of the Trump administration.

About the only recourse those fighting these pipeline issues have is to put pressure on the banks and financial institutions that are financing the pipeline projects.  There has been a significant number of cities, universities, religious institutions and individuals who have divested in pipeline companies and the fossil fuel sector in general.
