Free Bag Initiative County Coucil Hearing

Free Bag Initiative County Coucil Hearing

As you may know legislation has been introduced in County Council  to reduce the use of plastic and paper carryout bags by retailers in Cuyahoga County. The legislation targets larger retailers (over 7,000 sq. ft.) and will require a 10 cent fee for those wishing to use a plastic or paper carryout bag for their purchases. The money generated by the sale of bags will be designated to provide 4 cents per bag going to the retailer for the administrative costs of collecting the fees and managing the system. The remaining 6 cents will go into the County’s Environmental Remediation Fund and may be used to pay costs of eligible environmental expenses including clean-up of lakes, rivers and waterways, pollution prevention and remediation, litter removal, education and awareness and other activities intended to combat the polluting effects of and accompanying blight caused by plastic and paper carryout bags on the environment in Cuyahoga County. The fee revenue will also be used to provide high quality, re-useable bags to Cuyahoga County residents FREE of charge. With the Trump Administration making significant cuts to Lake Erie cleanup and environmental cleanup and protection efforts in general, it will be up to us to lead the way if we want to keep our Lake, beaches, parks and neighborhoods clean from the litter caused by plastic and paper carryout bags. We are on a tight timeline as the legislation is scheduled for second reading of the legislation on November 28 and final vote on December 12We need your help in mobilizing support. There are several key actions that will help make our voices heard:
