Noble Road Toxic Dump Hearing
Many of you are aware of the long fight waged by residents of Noble Road in East Cleveland against the ARCO dump. This alleged construction debris recycling center was a curse on the neighborhood for the past three years. It was never a real recycling center. It was a dump for construction debris where the debris was never sorted, it was mixed together in piles that at times were three stories high. The dump prevented residents from any enjoyment of their homes, created air pollution from the dump operation, brought rats to the neighborhood, and destroyed any hope of peace and quiet with an endless parade of dump trucks going to and from the site. Finally, the neighbors were able to get the attention of the Ohio EPA which closed the dump and is now cleaning it up. Not before a major fire – one of the neighbors’ greatest fears – broke out the end of October.
Now the neighbors are finally getting their day in court where their suit for damages against ARCO will be heard in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. We want everybody who can to come to the hearing to show their support for the neighbors in what will hopefully be one of final chapters in this long, sorry episode that has been a poster boy for environmental injustice in Northeast Ohio. Here are the details. Harris Drummonds et al vs 1705 Noble Road Properties LLC et al, case number CV 17 884313 will be heard on Thursday December 21 at 10 am, in courtroom 20-D by judge Carolyn B. Friedland at the Justice Center (1200 Ontario St. Cleveland 44113). Court hearings are frequently changed at the last minute, so consult the Common Pleas court web site here or here to confirm that this hearing will be held.
