Democratizing the Internet: A CCPC membership meeting talk.
Bill Callahan will talk about the economic and social impact of almost 30% of Cleveland households, including a majority of low income households, still living without home Internet access; the historic sources of digital exclusion, including AT&T's digital redlining of low income neighborhoods and the collapse of public regulation of broadband monopolies; and the implications for this community of Federal and state broadband issues like Lifeline rollback, net neutrality and rural broadband funding. Bill Callahan is Director of Connect Your Community, a digital justice advocacy organization in Cleveland, and also serves as research and policy coordinator for the National Digital Inclusion Alliance. He has worked in community technology efforts in Cleveland neighborhoods since 1996.
