  • CCPC Statement on the New Chair of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party

    For Immediate Release –

The Cuyahoga County Progressive Caucus is proud to endorse Mayor Trevor Elkins to be the next Chair of the County Democratic Party.

Some have criticized the Cuyahoga County Progressive Caucus by claiming that we are trying to run the Democratic Party from the outside, by endorsing various candidates in general, and with our endorsement of Trevor Elkins in particular for the Party’s Chair. The reality is CCPC’s endorsements are like any other organization’s endorsements.

Our endorsed candidates may choose to support candidates that we do not endorse, and we are clear that this will be the case with Mayor Elkins. That is how politics works. Another reality is that although many of CCPC’s members are not Democrats, only members who are Democratic Central Committee members will have a say in who the next Party Chair will be.

To be clear, we understand that Mayor Elkins has a strong history as a member of the Democratic Party and is unwavering in his belief that the Democratic Party is the vehicle for progress in Cuyahoga County. We believe he agrees with our policies in general, but we also understand that he is a principled, independent individual who will not necessarily agree with us on any given issue. We understand that our role and that of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party are different, but can be complementary on areas of agreement.

The mayor has not been involved with the recruitment or endorsement of any Progressive Caucus candidates currently running for office in Cuyahoga County because his role is to support endorsed Democratic candidates. We are supporting Mayor Elkins for Party Chair because he is a member of CCPC—along with numerous other elected Democrats—and a significant portion of our membership are members of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party.

We believe his view of government’s role in improving the lives of everyday citizens aligns with ours. Furthermore, we appreciate Trevor Elkins’ belief that the most effective manner to grow the Democratic Party is to become more inclusive in the conversations held with the broader community, and to never restrict the democratic rights of the electorate.

  • They Can't Kill us All: Law Enforcement, Race and Justice

After Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice and Freddie Gray were all killed by police, setting off protests in their respective cities, Washington Post reporter Wesley Lowery began to question the data around police shootings. His inquiry spurred The Post's investigative data-gathering project The Fatal Force, which won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. Lowery's experiences traveling across the country covering police shootings are chronicled in his book They Can’t Kill Us All: Ferguson, Baltimore, and a New Era in America's Racial Justice Movement. In it, he also describes the events that led to the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and how black activists used social media to elevate their message. Join us for a conversation with Shaker Heights High School graduate and Pulitzer Prize winner Wesley Lowery on the ongoing struggle between law enforcement, race, and justice. Tickets: $20 members/$35 nonmembers. Currently, Ohio's minimum wage is $8.10 an hour... far below what would be considered a living wage, even by conservative standards. However, a $15 minimum wage is a living wage here in Cuyahoga County but it is NOT YET the minimum wage. The Progressive Caucus is committed to increasing the standard of living for every person in the Cuyahoga County who suffers from wages far below what is required to make ends meet. This would be a HUGE step toward ending poverty locally. We are teaming up with Rise Up Cleveland to help pass legislation that would increase Cleveland's minimum wage to $15 per hour. Read the Proposed Ordinance HERE.

    About Rise Up Cleveland

Raise Up Cleveland is a movement to make poverty history. We won't stop until we ensure all workers have a path to $15 per hour and union rights, affordable child care, quality long-term care and properly address racism, discrimination, and injustice in our community.

In just two short weeks we were able to gather 28,662 signatures on a petition to raise the minimum wage in the city of Cleveland to $15 per hour. Now we are focused on reaching out to our City Council representatives to encourage them to act on this important issue.

    What About Small Business??

Some claim that this proposed ordinance would hurt or even kill small businesses like restaurants. This is false. Here are some highlights from the ordinance:

    • Companies with 25 or fewer employees will be completely exempt from paying the $15 wage and are only subject to the state minimum of $8.10.
    • Family owned establishments will be allowed to pay family members as well as "casual workers" the state minimum.
    • Employees who receive tips that equal (when combined with their wage) $15 or more per hour will be exempt. Meaning nothing will change for many food service staff.

Read the Proposed Ordinance (621-16) HERE           Visit Rise Up Cleveland for more information
