Randy’s Rants

Randy’s Rants is a series of essays by legendary Cleveland author, activist and CCPC member Randy Cunningham. We’ll be featuring one each week for as long as Randy is willing to write them.

What Are They Thinking?

National

Trump makes it all about the oil It is important to remember that Trump’s claimed interest in Maduro’s alleged drug trafficking stands in marked contrast to his pardon of Juan Orlando Hernandez. The former President of Honduras was convicted of, not alleged to have smuggled more than 400 pounds of cocaine into the United States. And he’s justifying ” running ” Venezuela and seizing the oil fields with the absurd claim that Venezuela stole oil from the U.S.

Trump’s Attack on Venezuela Could Change the World. Here’s How The U.S. intervention in Venezuela is forcing a geopolitical reckoning – in Washington, the Western Hemisphere and around the world. What does this mean for the rest of Latin America? How will adversaries like Russia, China and Iran recalibrate? What will be the impact on the global energy markets? And does this mark a permanent shift in the U.S. projection of power?

Trump escalates aggressive posture on Greenland Trump is escalating his rhetoric about potentially seizing Greenland following the U.S. military action in Venezuela and capture of the country’s leader, Nicholas Madura. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller ramped up the rhetoric by saying ” nobody’s going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland.” Is Greenland next?

On 5th anniversary of the January 6 Capitol insurrection, Trump looks to recast history Trump continued to deny responsibility for the violent January insurrection on the fifth anniversary of the riot last week, launching a White House webpage trying to reframe history and giving a speech to House Republicans blaming his political opponents and the media for the attack like any fascist would do.

Orange rivers and melting glaciers: federal report shows rapid change in the Arctic Hundreds of Arctic rivers and streams are turning bright red – orange, not from chemical pollution, but from naturally occurring iron spilling from long – frozen ground as temperatures warm. The ” rusting rivers ” phenomenon, which has been documented across northern Alaska, offers a vivid example of the effects of climate change. More on climate change below.

DHS begins slashing FEMA disaster response staff as 2026 begins The cuts target FEMA’s On – Call Response and Recovery ( CORE ) teams, which form the backbone of the agency’s operations during and after a disaster. FEMA is also planning to fire thousands of workers who deploy during hurricanes, wildfires and other national emergencies. Which will save money when there are no disasters, but what happens now after a disaster happens?

Health officials slash the number of vaccines recommended for all kids Is a continuation of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ‘s MASA ( Make America Sick Again ) campaign. Kennedy, who has no medical training, has long been skeptical of all vaccines because he is a believer in right – wing conspiracies. The changes were made without public comment, input form vaccine manufacturers and input from competent vaccine scientists.

Donald Trump’s Five Most Shocking Climate Claims in 2025 In the past decade, Trump has made a barrage of unusual, misleading or dubious assertions about the climate crisis, calling it a hoax. But last year he may have outdone himself. Samples from the article include ” putting people over fish, wind energy is driving the whales crazy, coal is clean and beautiful and the world is cooling not warming. ”

Democrats start 2026 with fresh momentum – and lingering challenges The party says it has found a winning strategy by emphasizing the high cost of living under Trump, which helped propel their candidates to victory in a number of competitive races. But even as they feel optimistic about flipping the house in the midterms, Democrats are still struggling with internal divisions between the progressive and centrist wings of the party.

4 reasons Americans are feeling worse about the economy According to this piece, the main reason is that the economy continues to be more and more K – shaped as the gap between the wealthiest 10 percent of us continues to expand. Other factors include the cooling of the job market making the future feel uncertain, everyone sees that their everyday essentials cost more and homeownership seems more and more out of reach.

Socialism Should Give Us Hope for Tomorrow Is an optimistic piece from our friends at Jacobin. After a year of unchecked crony capitalism courtesy of the Trump regime, how about another vision? Socialists believe that the economic resources that support our collective existence should be collectively owned instead of being in the hands of a wealthy minority whose interests always conflict with the interests of the rest of the population. What do you think?

What are the odds? Analyzing global six scenarios for 2026 The odds of Trump pulling off an end to the war in Ukraine are set at 4 to 1. The odds of the bond market collapses are set at 6 to 1, The odds of Netanyahu again surviving are set at 3 to 1. The odds of Hungarian President Viktor winning reelection are set at 2 to 1. The odds of a shadow banking crisis are set at 3 to 1. And finally the odds of Democrats winning the House and Republicans retaining control of the Senate are each set at 2 to 1.

Who Will Pay for Capital Repairs at New Brook Park Browns Dome? It’s Entirely Unclear  The Haslam’s will soon build a $2.4 billion dome in Brook Park. And while the funding for the project is pretty much locked up, one looming, lingering question is how exactly repairs will be paid for. Maintenance for a domed stadium will cost twice as much as maintenance for the open aired stadium on the lake and the Sin Tax will not provide nearly enough funds.

Cleveland City Council swears in three new members during celebratory, fiery ceremony The new members include Austin Davis, Nikki Hudson and CCPC endorsed candidate Tanmay Shah. While Davis was complimentary of Mayor Justin Bibb and his administration, Hudson embraced her time as an activist and Shah made clear his priorities are a democratic socialist approach to governing.

Organizers Launch Bid to Overturn Ohio’s Latest Marijuana Law Changes Ohioans for Cannabis Choice is mounting a referendum effort against a new law cracking down on intoxicating hemp and making several changes to Ohio’s voter passed recreational marijuana law. They’ll need to collect almost 250.000 signatures to put the question on the November ballot. We wish Ohioans for Cannabis Choice good luck in their effort.

Ohio Cities Rank Among the Most Medically Expensive As Americans struggle to afford groceries and utilities, a new study finds that three Ohio cities are among the most expensive for another essential – medical care. Cleveland ( 2nd most expensive city ), Toledo ( 4th most expensive city ) and Cincinnati ( 11th most expensive city ) are in the top 11 in terms of how big a bite medical expenses take out of their incomes.

Acton announces running mate in Ohio’s governor’s race hours after Ramaswamy confirms his The leading candidates for Ohio governor have picked their running mates a little less than a month before they have to file their official candidate paperwork. Ramaswamy selected Ohio Senate President and fellow MAGA lunatic Rob McColley, Acton selected former Ohio Democratic Party Chair David Pepper.

ICE officer kills a Minneapolis driver in a deadly start to Trump’s latest immigration operation The ICE goons murdered the 37 – year – old woman in front of a family member during a traffic stop in a residential neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis just a few blocks from some of the oldest immigrant markets and about a mile from where George Floyd was murdered, Her murder quickly drew a crowd of hundreds of angry protesters.

Immigration – related lawsuits flooded Cleveland federal court in 2025. Here’s a look at each case More than a dozen lawsuits have been filed in northern Ohio this year as Trump’s ICE goons ramped up legal pressure in immigration cases, breaking with decades of precedent and leaving some people jailed for months. Most of the lawsuits filed in federal court have challenged Trump’s claim that immigration judges have no authority to grant bond to those arrested.

ICE Arrests Are Forcing American Moms to Leave Their Jobs A jump in immigration enforcement by Trump’s ICE goons is having a detrimental impact on America’s child care system, reducing the number of immigrant workers available and prompting mothers with young children to leave their jobs as they scramble for stable care. Nationwide, about 1 in 5 childcare workers are immigrants

Randy’s Rants

Randy’s Rants is a series of essays by legendary Cleveland author, activist and CCPC Member Randy Cunningham. We’ll be featuring a different one each week for as long as Randy is willing to write the articles.

National

The alliance of authoritarianism and oligarchy shows its hand in DC The pattern is clear. In Los Angeles, Trump deployed the National Guard against the will of local officials. In D.C., he has seized control of the police. The next city could be Chicago. Each move makes it easier to accept military or federally controlled police as a normal response to political opposition. Meanwhile, there are no rules for the emerging oligarchs except blind allegiance to Trump

Sherrod Brown and Mamdani are very different – today’s Democrats need both There is much to admire about what Mamdani did in his New York City campaign, and he sure looks like the kind of new voice that Democrats need. But for people between the coasts, the Mamdani phenomenon may seem to be just the latest twist in the political taste of coastal cities. That’s why the national Democratic party needs Sherrod Brown’s more conservative voice in the midwest.

In the redistricting push, Democrats find an aggressive identity and progressives are on board Fight! Fight! Fight! It’s not just Trump’s mantra anymore. As he pushes Republican states to redraw their congressional districts to the GOP’s advantage. Democrats have finally shown they are willing to go beyond words of outrage and use whatever power they do have to win. The progressive and centrist wings of the party are united in this pursuit.

‘ The courts are helpless: ‘ Inside the Trump administration’s steady erosion of judicial power Six months into Trump’s second term, his administration is at war with the federal judiciary, evading court orders blocking its agenda, suing judges for alleged misconduct, and veering toward what multiple current and former federal judges say could be a constitutional crisis. In other words, what we always feared would happen.

consistently found that hand – counting ballots to be less accurate and more expensive than using machine tabulators. Trump, whose long spread baseless lies about the security of mail ballots and voting machines also falsely claimed that the United States is the only country in the world that uses mail – in ballots.
Repealing EPA’s endangerment finding will cause a public health nightmare As America faces increasing health threats from wildfire smoke, summer heat waves and rising cases of asthma and other respiratory threats, the last thing we need is to reverse laws that protect U.S. air quality. Yet, that’s precisely what Trump intends to do by proposing a repeal of the central scientific finding that is the basis of the Clean Air Act.

Robert Kennedy Has Gutted Our Best Defense Against Future Pandemics In 2020 and 2021 mRNA technology saved millions of lives by creating the first COVID vaccines. Without mRNA technology the vaccine could not have been created. However in the last few months Kennedy has canceled over a billion dollars in mRNA contracts with Moderna and the Biomedical Advance Research and Development Authority ( BARDA ) .What happens when the next pandemic comes?

Surprise! Trump finds yet another way to screw American consumers The new way is the announcement last week that the 50% tariffs on aluminum and steel to 400 more product categories, a move that will almost certainly raise prices for American consumers who are desperate for a reprieve. Basically, if it’s shiny, metallic, or remotely related to aluminum or steel, it’s on the list. Think of how endless the list of products with any aluminum or steel is.

Will rising food prices hurt Trump? Have you noticed that your groceries are more expensive? Food costs have risen 3% this year and will only continue to rise as Trump’s tariffs go into effect. But will anyone blame Trump or the Republicans? The ” it’s the economy, stupid ” theory suggests he will be blamed. But there is a competing theory that Trump’s base is a cult and normal political laws don’t apply to him.

East Cleveland Jail Closes After Inspections Detail Various Violations Cells lacked seating, towels and clean bedding. Mattresses were ripped. Use – of – force reports were missing officers’ names or details of injuries. One officer told inspectors that he had never seen the jail’s medical policies. The jail failed to separate violent and nonviolent offenders. And the jail had security issues, including broken cameras and unsecured perimeter issues.

Cuyahoga County Deputies Called ‘ Cowboys ‘ for Pointing Assault Rifle Out of Window During High – Speed Chase Isan Vajuci, a Cuyahoga County sheriff’s deputy, pointed a assault rifle out of a moving cruiser’s window while speeding more than 100 mph at times during a chase of a stolen car, bodycam footage shows. Sheriff Harold Preter of course would not answer specific questions about the chase or if it violated pursuit policy.
State

What are Ohio Democrats going to do about redistricting this fall? The Ohio Constitution requires that a new congressional map be passed by 60% of lawmakers by the end of the month or it goes to the redistricting commission. And the one the Republican fascist majority will pass will almost certainly feature extreme gerrymandering. The most interesting option open to Democrats is a referendum, which would almost certainly have big dollar national backing.

Ohio Gov. DeWine Sending Guard Troops to D.C. Makes Him Complicit in Trump’s Military Occupation As usual, when Trump says jump, Gov. No Spine DeWine says how high. Actually how low might be more accurate. No Spine is not stupid. He certainly knows that the bizarre, militarized occupation of D.C. is based on fallacies about rising Washington crime debunked by data that proves otherwise. By the way, Cleveland has about the same crime rate as D.C. does. Washington. So why isn’t the National Guard here?

Sherrod Brown’s strategic Senate play – Why the Democrat could beat Trump acolyte Jon Husted Envisions a very strong Democratic ticket with Brown and Dr. Amy Acton at the top that could fundamentally alter Ohio’s political trajectory. What makes the Senate race intriguing is that career politician Jun Husted cannot deploy the ” career politician ” attack that worked for Bernie Moreno against Brown last year.

Why Gaza Matters to America & Ohio Why should Ohio care? For one, because what we bankroll abroad writes our character at home. Because our Jewish and Palestinian neighbors are grieving in our schools, synagogues, mosques, and living rooms. Because America isn’t a bystander, we’re the largest military backer of Israel, at $3.8 billion a year. Here in Ohio, our state treasury holds over a quarter billion dollars in unrestricted Israeli Bonds.

Huge numbers of Ohioans to See Big Increases in Insurance Costs The subsidy known as the ” enhanced premium tax credit ” is set to expire in 2026. It was created during the pandemic to make insurance purchased on the marketplace created by The Affordable Care Act more affordable. Experts are warning that more than 500,000 Ohioans are poised to lose insurance subsidies starting next year.
Immigration

Companies aiding Trump’s immigration crackdown see ‘ extraordinary ‘ revenues The tech, surveillance and private prison providers arming Trump’s massive expansion and weaponization of immigration enforcement are running a victory lap after reporting their latest financial reports. Private prison company executives during their respective calls could barely contain their excitement.

The Largest Immigrant Detention Center in The U.S. Has Opened. What You Need To Know A detention center that is poised to become the largest of its kind in the country opened last week in El Paso amid concerns over safety, costs, and a lack of transparency. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) immediately began detaining people at the facility which is dubbed by the ICE goon supporter as the ” Lone Star Lockup.”
Black Lives Matter

The plot to destroy Black political power Get ready for the rage: The conservative majority on the Supreme Court looks likely to gut the last remaining parts of the Voting Rights Act. Promoted by a Black conservative, Justice Uncle Tom Thomas, the high court  will consider in October a question that answers itself – whether it is wrong to stop openly racist tactics in drawing congressional districts. And sadly, we know where they will go with this.

DEI closures at colleges leave students with ‘ a different reality ‘ The student experience is changing at universities after multiple diversity, equity and inclusion ( DEI ) programs, offices and centers have been shut down. Students have returned to campus climates that are still racist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist and otherwise discriminatory. But they are returning to places that no longer have the infrastructure to address these challenges.

CCPC September Meeting: Ongoing Struggles

CCPC September Meeting: Ongoing Struggles Thursday, September 25 from 6:30 to 8 pm. Struggling is the best way we can describe our country as it descends deeper into fascism. We’ll be focusing on the atrocities occurring in Washington DC, Columbus and all around the country with the horrible mass deportations. We hope to offer some reason for hope and we’d like to hear what you have to say too. Please click here to register for the event. After registering you’ll receive an email with the Zoom link.

Hunger in Gaza reaches ‘ tipping point ‘ under Israel’s offensive as children face lifelong impacts of malnutrition Doctors and aid workers inside Gaza, themselves overworked and underfed, have been warning for months about the critical lack of food and the spiraling cost of the little that is available due to Israel’s offensive and crippling aid restrictions. They say that their worst fears are now coming to pass. Although international outrage is growing, nothing is being done.

Trump’s tariffs could squeeze US factories and boost costs by up to 4.5%, a new analysis finds As Trump prepares to announce new tariff increases, the cost of his policies are starting to come into focus for a domestic manufacturing sector that depends on global supply chains. Common sense says that if costs go up 4.5%, then prices will go up 4.5%. And this increase could also lead to stagnation of wages, layoffs and closures of plants.

The proposal by Trump’s Environmental Pollution Agency would rescind a 2009 declaration that determined that carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses endanger public health and welfare. The ‘ endangerment finding ‘ is the legal underpinning of a host of climate regulations under the Clean Air Act. And of course the Polluter – in Chief wants to get rid of it.
According to an analysis at the Urban Institute, at the end of 2024, even the maximum Snap benefit would not cover the cost of a modestly priced meal in 99% of all counties in the US. Many lower – wage workers have grown more reliant on Snap benefits as food prices have risen 23.6% since 2020.

Trump’s rewriting of reality on jobs numbers is chilling, but it could backfire The firing of Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer was exactly what dictators do to those who deliver bad news. But it could backfire by eroding the trust of investors, companies and organizations that depend on accurate and truthful statistics on the economy’s health to make major decisions.

Trump’s broken pledges are stacking up to cartoonish heights The false promises are endless. Highlights include the promise to lower grocery prices, the promise not to cut Medicare or Medicaid, the promise that trade wars and tariffs would be good for American workers and the economy, the promise to balance the budget, the promise to end the ” weaponization ” of government, And the most laughable, ” drain the swamp.”

Early GOP rifts emerge as Congress braces for shutdown fight Rifts are emerging between Republicans over how to approach next month’s government funding fight, with some pushing for leaders  to try to pass full – year spending plans and others already expressing openness to another funding patch if it means less spending. When lawmakers return from the August recess they’ll have just weeks to fund the government and avoid a shutdown

Election 2028 is on – Democrats see opportunity and a wide open primary Kamala Harris’ decision not to run for governor of California seems to be a clear indication that she intends to run for president. On the progressive side, Bernie Sanders has indicated that he will not run in 2028 because he will be too old. Which means that Alexandria Ocasio – Cortez could be the progressive wing candidate in 2028.

Browns talk stadium ownership, sin tax and more in pinning down Brook Park stadium details Finally some clarity on ownership cost overruns and maintenance. ” A new community authority ”  – a public, nonprofit entity would be created by Brook Park to own the stadium. Construction cost overruns would be covered by the Browns. And a tripling of the Sin Tax, to be approved by Cuyahoga County voters, would cover maintenance. Would you vote for that?

Rising Star Baristas Seek Union Help Following Safety Concerns at Lakewood Cafe A leaky gas generator, a broken carbon monoxide reader and a petition to reinstate a fired worker have all led to organizing at one of Cleveland’s largest coffee shops. The employees have not yet picked a union to join and it is not yet clear how many of the 40 baristas and managers would be eligible to join a union. Right now they are asking for public support.

Polensek ends speculation, will run for re – election The “dean ” of Cleveland City Council, tough – on – crime dinosaur Mike Polensek is officially running for re – election and will challenge fellow incumbent Anthony Hairston to represent the Collinwood neighborhood. Polensek, the longest serving member of council in Cleveland history, was first elected in 1978 when he was 27 years old and is now finishing his 47th year on council

Consumer agency manufacturers want an audit of $237 million in subsidies to Ohio coal plants Thankfully, the coal subsidies that were passed with HB 6 in 2019 are set to end this week. But as the repeal of those subsidies takes effect, the states utility watchdog for consumers and Ohio’s manufacturers are calling on the Public Utilities Commission to audit the money paid to the plants the last two years

Very Alarming ‘ Ohio Housing Advocates Decry Trump’s Executive Order on Homelessness Once again cruelty is the point. Ohio housing advocates are speaking out against Trump’s executive order that would force those experiencing homelessness off the streets by committing them to mental institutions or drug treatment facilities without their consent. Currently, no such facilities exist in the state of Ohio.
Immigration

‘ Alligator Alcatraz ‘ detainees are being held without charges and barred from legal access, lawyers say Civil Rights lawyers seeking a temporary restraining order against an immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades say that ” Alligator Alcatraz ” detainees have been barred from meeting attorney’s, are being held without any charges and that a federal immigration court has canceled bond hearings.

DHS is urging DACA recipients to self deport The cruelty continues. Under Trump, DACA recipients are not automatically exempt from being deported and in fact, don’t even have any legal status. Trump said during the 2024 presidential campaign that he would deport all of DACA recipients, but after becoming president again he said he would let them stay. And now self deportation if being urged. Are DACA deportations coming next?

ICE recruits former federal workers to join its ranks amid hiring spree Trump wants to recruit 10,000 people for immigration enforcement, using new congressional funds appropriated in the Big Ugly Betrayal Bill last month. The goal is to eventually reach 1 million deportations a year and of course many of those will be immigrants who are here legally. So far this year there have been about 185,000 deportations.

Despite grand claims, a new report shows noncitizen voting hasn’t materialized New research released last week tracking state government efforts across the country confirmed what election officials have said all along: Noncitizen voting occasionally happens but in miniscule numbers, and not in any coordinated way. Not even one state found a coordinated effort to get noncitizens to vote.

Trump tightens the reins of foreign students in multifront immigration crackdown on universities Trump is making it harder and harder for international students and immigrants to pursue higher education in the US. Dreamers, foreign students seeking visas and potentially those looking to work in the country after graduation have all found themselves caught in the crossfire as Trump seeks to curb immigration while also cracking down on colleges and universities.
Black Lives Matter

Fewer Americans see discrimination as anti – DEI push gains traction, AP – NORC polling shows This very sad news. Slightly less than half of U.S. adults believe that Black people face ” a great deal ” or ” quite a bit ” of discrimination in the United States. That’s a decline from the solid majority, 60%, who thought Black Americans faced high levels of discrimination, in the spring of 2021 in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder.

Black unemployment under Trump reaches its highest rate since the pandemic. Here’s what it could mean. The latest jobs report released by the Department of Labor shows that Black unemployment spiked to 7.2% in July, marking its highest rate since the pandemic ended nearly four years ago. Since Black workers are often ” last hired and first fired, ” the statistic could be a signal of deeper trouble coming in the economy.

House Republicans pass ‘ one big beautiful bill ‘ after weeks of division The bill is actually one big ugly betrayal  of the working class. Nonpartisan forecasts are that it will increase the federal deficit by trillions of dollars and cause about 10 million people to lose health care coverage, while shifting resources away from the lowest income houses to the wealthiest in the form of massive tax breaks for the rich. The big ugly betrayal now heads to the Senate will changes are expected to be made. Let’s hope the changes are good.
Trump military parade costs could hit $45 million The parade, which coincides with Trump’s birthday, will feature thousands of service members and dozens of military vehicles. About 150 vehicles and 50 aircraft are scheduled to be at the festivities, which will stretch for nearly 4 miles from the Pentagon to the White House. And the $45 million price tag is real, it was confirmed by the Army themselves. Meanwhile, DOGE destruction continues to eliminate some very essential services.

US judges who rule against Trump are being barraged with abuse and threats US judges who have increasingly rebuked the Trump administration’s unconstitutional deportation agenda and other MAGA policies are facing intense verbal assaults from the president and his allies, which seem to be spurring other dangerous threats to judges, say legal experts and former judges. In the four months that Trump has been president, more than 200 lawsuits have challenged his executive orders and policies.

Has Trump Buyer’s Remorse Already Set In? This piece examines independent voters and if they could go back in time, would they change their vote because of dashed expectations? This is a much higher standard than simply disapproving of Trump on an array of issues. It forces the voter to admit they were wrong in casting their ballot for Trump just a short time ago. About nine percent of the independents who voted for Trump said they wouldn’t have done so if they knew what they know now.

Original Sin: book on Biden’s health decline reopens Democratic Party’s wounds Based on interviews with more than 200 people including White House insiders, members of Congress and donors, Original Sin presents a scathing account of an elderly, egotistical president cocooned from reality seeking re – election in 2024 despite significant concerns about his declining health and cognitive abilities. One has to wonder where these 200 people were in 2023 when he could have gracefully decided not to run.

Local

‘ I Am Not Your Negro ‘: A Defiant Kahlil Seren Tells Off Cleveland Heights City Council in Tense Emergency Meeting Amid accusations that his wife made antisemitic remarks to staff, Seren suddenly disappeared for a week and City Council members were concerned about his welfare. He reappeared Friday and lashed out against them and the people at the meeting calling for his resignation. Cleveland Heights CCPC members will be voting on our Cleveland Heights endorsements shortly after the filing deadline in June.

Progressive PAC ready to take on Cleveland City Council’s incumbents CCPC member’s started A Better Cleveland for All ( ABC ) in 2021.The organization largely backs relative newcomers who support progressive policies and want reforms at City Hall. Their endorsements for 2025 include Rebecca Maurer ( Ward 5 ), Alana Belle ( Ward 9 ),Nikki Hudson ( Ward 11 ), Tanmay Shah ( Ward 12 ). Cleveland CCPC member’s will be voting on our endorsement’s shortly after the filing deadline in June.

Browns to Cuyahoga County : We’ll build the stadium the Brook Park stadium with or without you In a statement last week, the Haslam Sports group saying County Executive Chris Ronayne’s opposition to the plan is ” inexplicable ” and that the stadium is being built in Brook Park with or without the county’s blessing. So the funding plan then would be Haslam putting in $1.2 billion, the state putting in $600 million ( more on that below ) and another $600 million from where?

NFL Commissioner Goodell makes pitch to Gov. Mike DeWine, legislative leaders for new Browns stadium NFL commissioner Roger Goodell joined Browns owner Jimmy Haslam last week in meeting with Gov. No Spine DeWine and other state leaders in the teams lobbying effort to secure $600 million in state money for a new Browns stadium in Brook Park. In case you’re wondering, the NFL makes about $38 billion in profit each year.

Browns vs. Cleveland and the county: who really holds the power in the stadium standoff Completes the trilogy of Browns articles in this week’s edition. The Browns leverage is if they get $600 million from the state they could probably do it themselves. The county’s leverage is the sin tax which funds maintenance for the three pro sports teams and currently would not cover Brook Park. Cleveland’s leverage is the lawsuit, which they might win. Who do you think holds the power?

Northeast Ohio fair housing advocates may close in 6 months amid federal funding cuts A Northeast Ohio nonprofit which investigates fair housing violations may have to shut its door before the end of the year after losing nearly all of its federal funding. The Fair Housing Resource Center cases of housing discrimination and offers an array of housing support services. The organization lost 90% of its funding and has already laid off about 75% of its staff. DOGE destruction continues.
State

Ohio lawmakers are quietly building a police state. They hope you won’t mind Actually they are hoping you won’t notice just as they are in Washington. Tucked inside the latest state budget proposal is a provision that would allow police departments to withhold vast swaths of records indefinitely during investigations, through appeals and perhaps forever. Supplemental reports, witness statements and officers notes all could be kept from the public eye. Secrecy  is the currency of authoritarianism.

Ohio Supreme Court Says Nitrogen Isn’t Toxic After It Killed a Guy at Timken Steel If nitrogen isn’t toxic, then why is Attorney General Dave Yo Yo Yost currently pushing to use nitrogen gas in the state’s death chamber? And the death chamber experience is exactly what happened to the Timken employee. He went into a pressurized room, a system malfunctioned, the room filled with nitrogen and the employee suffocated. The owner of Timken Steel contributes millions to Republican campaigns which is the likely basis of the bizarre decision.

Immigration

Supreme Court Justices appear divided in birthright citizenship arguments The Trump administration is asserting two things. First, a federal court shouldn’t have jurisdiction when issuing an injunction that affects the entire country. And second, the 14th Amendment was only meant to apply to babies born to newly freed Slaves after the Civil War. Both assertions are absurd and have never been remotely considered in the last 127 years. But this court seems divided after opening arguments. WTF!

Trump suspends the asylum system, leaving immigrants to face uncertain future The way asylum used to work and should still work is that an immigrant arrives at the border and speaks with an ICE officer. If the immigrant says he has a credible fear of returning to his home country, then the immigrant enters the country and awaits a hearing before an immigration court judge who determines if asylum should be granted. But Trump has suspended this program leaving asylum – seekers in limbo.

The Trump administration plans to deploy hundreds more federal agents to ramp up immigration enforcement across the country The Trump administration is planning to deploy hundreds more federal personnel to ramp up arrests of undocumented immigrants The plan includes tapping border agents nationwide and using state National Guard units locally. It is important to remember that only undocumented immigrants who have committed a crime should be legally be deported.

Ohio jails are helping Trump’s mission of mass deportation At the start of the year, just two Ohio jails, in Geauga and Seneca counties housed ICE detainees. Combined, they averaged about 120 detainees at any given time. Now the state has at least four times that capacity. The Mahoning County jail, The Butler County jail, the Northeast Ohio Corrections Center and the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio have all offered up bed space for ICE – some for the first time.

DHS says it’s in the beginning stages of vetting process for immigrant reality TV show The Department of Homeland Security is reviewing a reality TV pitch where immigrants would compete for American citizenship. Rob Worsoff, the producer who pitched the idea to DHS said he envisions the show as being ” a positive love letter to America. ” Worsoff  produced The Millionaire Matchmaker, Duck Dynasty and The Biggest Loser. Only The Biggest Loser would consider this a good idea which is why DHS could approve it.
Black Lives Matter

Trump seeks a return to America’s racist roots – and he’s moving fast This column documents all of it. The fight against diversity equity and inclusion, the return to extreme racial exclusion, inequality and white supremacy, the end of affirmative action, the end of prohibiting discriminatory hiring practices and the end of prohibiting segregation for government contractors. And as you’ll see in the article below, Trump is also seeking a return to the world’s racist roots.

Trump accused of expanding the global ‘ white supremacist ‘ agenda with South African refugee program President Donald Trump is being accused by critics of escalating a global white supremacist agenda after his administration launched a new refugee program for white South Africans under the guise of racial discrimination. ” White supremacists are not playing the domestic game. They’re playing a global game, ” said Joseph Tolton, a pan – African activist and founder of Interconnected Justice.

Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio – Cortez and the courage to brawl for the working class Bernie’s Stop Oligarchy Tour was exciting enough as a solo act. But with AOC now the opening act it’s twice as exciting. The tour is actually drawing bigger crowds than when Bernie ran for president. All Democrats have been looking for leadership and maybe this is it from our wing of the party. Bernie has said that he will be too old to run for president in 2028, but AOC will be just old enough to run then.

Trump officials texted war plan to a group chat in a secure app that included a journalist Top national security officials for President Donald Trump, including his Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, texted plans for upcoming military strikes in Yemen to a group chat in a messaging app that included the editor – in – chief of the Atlantic. And of course they blamed the editor. The basic problem with the Trump administration isn’t just the draconian policies, it’s the incompetence.

Here’s what federal judges could do if they’re ignored by the Trump administration Sadly the options aren’t good. The most likely response by a court if the administration were to defy a court order would be to hold the agency acting in defiance of an order in civil contempt, which would allow a judge to levy daily fines on the government for non – compliance until they comply. But it would be the Trump controlled Injustice Department that would be collecting the fines. More on the courts below.

Trump, Roberts on collision course as lawsuits creep toward Supreme Court So far most of the unconstitutional executive orders the Trump administration has issued have been blocked by the federal courts. And so far most of the blocked orders, even the most absurd, have been appealed by the Trump administration. And so far Trump has said he will not violate a court order. But all of these cases will eventually get to the Supreme Court. What happens then will decide the fate of the nation.

Trump voters are starting to get burned by DOGE’s chainsaw Some examples are a Wisconsin man who voted for Trump and his Peruvian wife got deported, a vet who voted for Trump and lost his job at a Veteran Affairs office, and a woman who proudly flew a Trump flag at her house and was fired from her Treasury Department job. There are more in the article and probably tens of thousands around the country who are just as angry as those cited in the article. Let’s hope they all vote for Democrats in the midterms.
There’s only one word to describe Trump’s negotiations with Russia: appeasement Trump and his top national security officials have persistently encouraged Putin by preemptively conceding some of Moscow’s key condition’s. There shall be no NATO membership for Ukraine, ever. Nor the recovery of Ukrainian territory seized by Russia since 2014. No peacekeepers either. And of course the Ukrainians are not even included in the negotiations.

RFK Jr. Unveils Disturbing Plan to Combat Bird Flu This would be a funny Saturday Night Live parody if it wasn’t true. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said that he thinks that the bird flu should be allowed to spread unchecked to identify birds that could be immune. What could possibly go wrong? According to experts cited in the article there is a lot that could go wrong. More on RFK Jr’s lunacy in this week’s state section.

The most likely Medicaid cuts would hit rural areas the hardest Working – age adults who live in small towns and rural areas are more likely to be covered by Medicaid than their counterparts in cities, creating a dilemma for Republicans looking to make deep cuts to the health care program. Most rural areas are represented by Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the dilemma for them is do they hurt their constituents or do they continue to bow down to Trump and Musk

The Varied Strains of Democrats Is an interesting article from our friends at The American Prospect. It describes the party as now having four quadrants. The first two are obvious, the progressive wing of the party that we are a part of led by Bernie Sanders and the corporate centrists who now have no apparent leader. The other two are degrees of Trump activism, Those who want to respond as if things were normal and those who want to respond as if we’re in a constitutional crisis threatening democracy.

Sex, Drinking and Dementia: 25 Lawmakers Spill on What Congress is Really Like It’s hard to find an institution the public loathes more than Congress. And if you’re one of the loathers and you click the link and read the article, you’ll most likely loath Congress even more. Politico interviewed 25 members of Congress who spoke only on the condition that their name cannot be used in the article. Which means a lot of this may or may not be true. Nevertheless, it is a good read.

A week of Cleveland Browns stadium smack talk, explained The Browns and Cleveland leaders spent last week trashing each others’ competing visions for the team’s future home. The chest – thumping made for good headlines in Cleveland. But the real action is now in Columbus. State lawmakers are weighing $600 million for the new Brook Park stadium. That would get the Browns halfway to their goal of $1.2 billion in public financing

Republicans in Ohio, and nationally are waging war on freedom of thought and expression in higher ed We have seen dictatorial regimes throughout history attempt to destroy institutions of higher learning that fail to sufficiently align themselves with the ruling ideology of the state. But we’ve never seen it in Ohio or in the United States – until now. In countries where the state is all powerful, citizens and institutions are told what to think, how to act, and even what words they can and cannot do. Is that where we’re heading?
Vaccine rates against measles, other infections sliding in Ohio Fewer and fewer children statewide are being immunized against preventable diseases, such as polio or measles, according to the Ohio Department of Health. Prior to the pandemic the vaccine rate in Ohio was 90%. But since then the rate is just above 80%. What do you think is going to happen to that rate in the next few years with anti – vaccine activist and conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. now running the Department of Health and Human Services?

After bitter defeats last year, Ohio Democrats are biding time as GOP moves full swing in 2026 Fresh off a pair of devastating losses last year – the bitter defeat of U.S. Senator Brown to Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno and the rejection by voters of the anti – gerrymandering amendment known as Issue 1 – the party’s efforts at building anything close to a winning ticket in 2026 have been muted, and for some moving too slowly. What do you think?
Immigration
Experts fear the men who were sent to El Salvador’s mega prison may never make it out Hundreds of Venezuelans who were deported to El Salvador from the United States in recent days could face long or indefinite detention in a prison system rife with human rights abuses, according to attorneys and experts on the region. But cruelty is the point with these detentions. And the fact that many of those deported were denied any due process and therefore might be innocent may be the cruelest thing about this saga.

Homeland Security makes cuts to offices overseeing civil rights protections The Department of Homeland Security is making cuts to three key offices that oversee civil rights protections across its broad mission, suggesting that they were impeding immigration enforcement efforts. The offices being gutted are the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman, and the Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman.

Trump revokes protections for 530,000 Cubans, Haitians and other migrants US President Donald Trump’s administration has said it will revoke the temporary legal status of more than half a million migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. The migrants were brought into the US under a Biden – era sponsorship process known as CHNV that was designed to open legal and migration pathways. Trump suspended the program once he took office.

Thousands of agents diverted to Trump immigration crackdown Federal agents who usually hunt down child abusers are now cracking down on immigrants who live in the United States without documentation. Homeland Security investigators who specialize in money laundering of the drug cartels are now raiding restaurants and other small businesses looking for immigrants who are not authorized to work. And obviously this is making us less safe than before the immigration crackdown began.

Federal investigation targets Ohio universities over diversity program The U.S. Department of Education has opened investigations into the Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati and 43 other schools for their participation in a program that encourages diverse people to get doctoral degrees in business. This must be what the half of the Department of Education that’s left is doing. Meanwhile the department is gutting student loans, enforcement of discrimination complaints and services to students with disabilities.

Trump threats have led to cancelled university events for women and Black alumni in Ohio On Valentine’s Day, the U.S. Department of Education issued a dear colleague letter to colleges and K – 12 schools that threatened to rescind federal funds for schools that use race conscious practices in admissions programing, training. hiring, scholarships and other things. Wouldn’t it be great if colleges would say FU to Trump and use the NIL money they are now paying athletes to make up for lost federal funds.

Zelenskyy shows true leadership as Trump implodes in Oval Office meltdown Donald Trump and VD Vance teamed up to embarrass the United States last Friday and most likely they derailed any meaningful efforts for a peace deal in the Russia – Ukraine War. The childish ambush began with Vance launching a tirade, criticizing President Joe Biden’s handling of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Trump then escalated things by shouting out that Ukraine ” doesn’t have the cards to negotiate.” Putin must be laughing his rear end off.

After Trump’s first month back, personal defiance matters more than ever Argues that liberals should respond to Trump with two raised middle fingers and an invitation to the culture warriors to kiss our collective rear ends. Trump voters didn’t want the decimation of social services, economic chaos or the rising threat of all out war in Europe. They just wanted all the queer people, feminist’s and Black Lives Matter supporters to bend the knee. So two raised middle fingers to them.

Who will stop Trump and Elon Musk from dismantling the US government There are two ways to descend into autocracy, gradually and suddenly. And as you know, we are on the bullet train. Yes there are the court’s. But what happens if Trump and Musk don’t obey the court orders or if the Supreme Court sides with them when the cases get there? This article argues that Congress should step in and maybe the wealthy Democratic Party  donors should back Republicans who fear a primary challenge if they grow a spine.

21 DOGE staffers resign, saying they won’t help ‘ dismantle ‘ public services A group of 21 career civil servants whose team was folded into Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency resigned last week, writing in a public letter that they refuse to use their skills to put Americans’ data at risk and ” dismantle critical public services.” The federal workers, mostly software engineers and product managers, were once part of the U.S. Digital Service, which was renamed DOGE when Musk started dismantling the federal government.
The Party of Reagan Becomes the Party of Putin Four decades after Ronald Reagan confronted the Soviet ” evil empire, ” Donald Trump has essentially switched sides. Reagan labeled the Soviet Union ” the evil empire ” for its human rights abuses and expansionist foreign policy. Trump regularly praises Putin as a ” strong ” leader. Reagan pushed for freedom in Eastern Europe from soviet hegemony, Trump victim – blames Ukraine, saying that the former Soviet republic brought in the invasion on itself. Are there now two ” evil empires”?

How Trump’s government – cutting moves risk exposing the CIA’s secrets In an effort to comply with an executive order to downsize the federal workforce, the CIA earlier this month sent the White House an extraordinary email listing all new hires that have been with the agency two years or less – a list that included CIA officers that were preparing to operate undercover – over an unclassified email server. While none of us actually know what the CIA does, we also don’t know what will happen if they stop doing their job.

Trump and Elon Musk are Floating ‘ DOGE Dividends.’ Low – income Americans might not benefit The intent here is of course to buy support for the dismantling of the federal government. People would then tend to look away from the disastrous effect of the cuts because, doesn’t a check for $5000 sound great? But the plan is to make the dividend available only to households who pay federal income taxes. And most people who earn less than $40,000 a year pay no federal income tax.

America’s nervous skies: Searches about airplane safety are rising Although flying is still considered to be safer than driving in a car, the growing fear is understandable. Two airplane crashes in Washington and Toronto, compared to none during the Biden administration, have spiked the number of ” how safe is flying ” searches on google. And this was before DOGE decided to lay off 132 FAA employees, including employees tasked with air traffic navigation maps.
Kennedy says panel will examine childhood vaccine schedule after promising not to change it To earn the vote he needed to become the nation’s top health official, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made a special promise to a U.S senator. And that promise was that he would not change the nation’s vaccine schedule. But last week he announced that he would be investigating the childhood vaccine schedule that prevents measles, polio and other dangerous diseases.

Internal complaints against Cleveland police can ‘ languish ‘ in city HR for years, records show The Cleveland Community Police Commission released data last week that showed there were 44 complaints alleging workplace violence, harassment, discrimination and retaliation against city employees. The complaints date back more than five years and are categorized as ” open ” by the city and apparently have never been investigated, much less resolved. WTF!

DeWine’s budget cuts $103 million from Ohio School districts, as costs explode for charters and vouchers. See if your district gets cut. Projections from the legislature’s own nonpartisan research agency show Gov.Mike DeWine’s proposed budget would slash $100 million from traditional public schools over the next two years while costs for privately operated charter schools and voucher programs jump another $500 million.

DOGE for Ohio? Vivek Ramaswamy governor’s race pushing cuts and merit pay Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who announced his candidacy for governor of Ohio last week, wants to reshape public schools with merit pay for teachers, cut regulations and slash spending. It’s a disruptive agenda that sounds a lot like the one Ramaswamy helped draw up for Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. He is likely to get Trump’s endorsement and be the favorite in 2026

Unions brace for fight as Ohio GOP moves ‘ Right to Work,’ strike bans Remember SB 5 in 2011? State House Republicans are moving bills that gradually limit union power, a strategy critics fear is an under – the – radar revival of the infamous SB 5 attempted overhaul of public sector unions. This year’s SB 1 would gut the union power of state college faculty unions and the fear is that the Republicans are using a piecemeal approach which would gradually gut the power of other public sector unions.

Ohio Bill Would Add New Civil Liability for Property Damaged in Protests Since criminal law already covers property damaged during protests, the point of this bill is intimidation. Instead of simply holding the perpetrator accountable, the proposal would expand liability to those who provide primary support  for the protest itself. So if CCPC organizes a protest, we would be liable for any property damage anybody who shows up to the protest inflicts. If the bill should pass, CCPC still intends to organize protests,

GOP Budget Reconciliation Plan – Cutting Essential Programs to Supercharge Deportations The Senate deal will reportedly include at least $175 billion for border and immigration enforcement, nearly six times the latest annual budget of Customs and Border Patrol and ICE combined. While exact details are yet to be set, in order to pay for this staggering amount, the plan calls for sweeping cuts to essential programs including potentially, Medicaid, Social Security, food stamps and more.

Trump administration throws out protections from deportation for Haitians This is very sad news for our Haitian neighbors in Springfield. The Haitians have been here legally under Temporary Protected Status which allows refugees to enter the United States to flee persecution, war or natural disaster. Last week the Trump administration rescinded the Haitians Temporary Protected Status. So where will they go? Back to Haiti is not a good option and one has to wonder who else will take them in.

Trump administration halts legal aid for migrant children, leaving some to navigate courts alone Cruelty is the point with the monsters now running our immigration system. Many of the children have entered the country alone and cannot speak English. Some of the kids are as young as 2 and their feet don’t even touch the floor when they are sitting in the courtroom. And of course they cannot possibly navigate the legal system without representation.

ICE lets local officials stop immigrants on the streets as the task force program is back As the Trump administration pushes for more mass deportations, the government has revived a long abandoned program that lets local and state law enforcement challenge people on the street about immigration status – and possibly arrest them for deportations. In other words, racial profiling. The program was dropped in 2012 after numerous racial profiling suits which resulted in millions of dollars in payouts.

Judge largely blocks Trump’s executive orders ending federal support for DEI programs A federal judge last week blocked sweeping executive orders from President Donald Trump that seek to end government support for diversity equity and inclusion. The preliminary injunction blocks the administration from terminating or changing federal contracts they consider equity – related. The judge found that the orders likely carry constitutional violations, including against free – speech rights.

Black Viewers Rally Around Joy Reid A day after winning an NAACP image award, one of MSNBC.s highest rated shows is done. The cancellation of Joy Reid’s primetime show, the ReidOut, has sparked outrage and confusion among viewers and fans. Reid was the only Black woman hosting a primetime cable news program and the ratings were high. So one has to wonder what the real reason was for the cancellation? What’s next? Is Rachel Maddow going to be cancelled too?

A worried NATO holds large – scale combat drills as the US stance on Europe shifts under Trump Which is completely understandable since Trump is about to hand Ukraine to Putin and Pete Hegseth has pretty much told Europe ” you’re on your own.” European countries conducted their largest combat exercises in years last week, testing their ability to deploy large – scale forces on the eastern border. Meanwhile, Putin is sitting in Moscow laughing his rear end off.

What to know about Trump’s appeal to the Supreme Court Trump is heading to the Supreme Court For the first time in his second term, using an emergency appeal to call on the justices to let him fire the head of a government ethics watchdog agency. The case will decide whether Congress can create independent agencies that are protected from the whims of the White House, or whether presidents can fire anyone seen as a potential critic. It will also give a clue as to whether or not the Supreme Court will cooperate with the fascist coup attempt.
Proud Boys leader pardoned by Trump wants to return to the scene of the crime as member of Congress Henry ” Enrique ” Tarrio was serving a 22 year sentence for convictions of multiple felonies before Trump pardoned him. Included are seditious conspiracy ” to oppose by force the lawful transfer of presidential power,” The judge called it a ” constituted act o f terrorism.” Sadly, he is running in Matt Gaetz’s district. And if that district could elect Gaetz, they could elect Tarrio.
The Courts Can’t Stop the Trump – Musk Coup In theory, the temporary restraining orders against Trump’s executive orders should be effective stopgaps. The problem is the court has no enforcement mechanism. It has no army, no police force, no power to enforce its will. Instead it’s the executive, in this case Trump, that is supposed to enforce the court’s orders. This piece argues that the only way to stop Trump is for his approval rating to nosedive.
Anger, chaos and confusion take hold as federal workers face mass layoffs Workers across the country have responded with anger and confusion the last few weeks as they grappled with the Trump administration’s aggressive effort to shrink the size of the federal workforce by ordering agencies to lay off probationary employees who have yet to qualify for civil service protections. And the cost of what these workers do to make the country run hasn’t been calculated yet.
Democrats need a new message: ‘ Blame Republicans ‘ This isn’t that hard. Democrats should have one simple message to deliver: Republicans are responsible for everything that happens from now on. Republicans control both houses of Congress and the presidency. All the unintended consequences, government shutdowns, and the certain colossal failures will be 100% Republican – owned. Sounds good. But the problem is the Democrats have been very bad at delivering any message.

Mayor Bibb Pitches Council a Meatier Cleveland Budget in the Face of a Year of Political Change Cleveland City Council and Mayor Bibb are in the midst of determining what the city will spend in the next year. In Bibb’s view, it’s roughly $2.1 billion, a 3% increase over what was spent last year. The main problem with the spending calculations though is that state and federal grants could be significantly cut or eliminated. So how is that possibility figured into the calculations?

The TIF scam continues. Money pooled by the city from taxes on the Bedrock Riverfront development that would have gone into the general fund will now, just as the other TIF’s, be used to back public infrastructure improvements for the billion project. If you click the link and read the article, you’ll see that development will be magnificent. But at what cost to the neighborhoods?
Cleveland Browns pitch financing plan for Brook Park stadium Speaking of taxpayer scams. The Browns are proposing a 50 / 50 split between private and public sector financing of the $2.4 billion domed stadium. Which means we would be paying $1.2 billion of the tab. Browns officials are of course claiming a sleight of hand when they say that financing will not come from the general revenue fund that provides services. But wherever that money comes from it will be money that would go into the general fund to provide services
Ronayne ‘ optimistic ‘ about Browns staying downtown Which doesn’t quite fit with the article above. Ronayne says in the article that ” active conversations ” have been ongoing for weeks with the Haslam’s and Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb about keeping the Browns on the lakefront. One of two things are going on. These conversations may be happening in case the Haslam’s don’t get $1.2 billion for the domed stadium. Or Bibb and Ronayne may posturing to make it look like they did everything they could to keep the Browns in Cleveland.
Job Cuts Begin at Cuyahoga Valley National Park Amid DOGE’s Valentine’s Day Weekend Binge The Cuyahoga Valley National Park has seen record attendance in recent years mostly because of its natural beauty and it being well maintained. Last year, CVNP saw roughly 2.9 million visitors enter its boundaries. But the DOGE cuts are a huge threat because if the park is not well maintained it will soon lose its natural beauty.
Conservative group launches ad campaign against Cleveland Clinic’s DEI initiatives The conservative nonprofit Consumers Research, a catchy name that makes people believe they are actually looking out for consumers, has launched a six figure TV ad campaign accusing the clinic of prioritizing patients based on race, performing child sex changes and pushing transgender propaganda. And of course they launched the campaign without having any evidence that their claims are true.

New Ohio Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel: Mike DeWine’s political heir or caretaker It is hard to say anything for sure except that Tressel and DeWine are both lying when they say they haven’t talked about it. If he is indeed just a caretaker, why not just say it. And if he is planning to run, he’ll need to get campaign infrastructure in place soon so he can begin fundraising. The most likely scenario is that he is thinking of it and will have DeWine’s blessing if he does it.
Students Say They Will Leave Ohio If Lawmakers Go Forward With Massive Higher Education Overhaul SB 1 would ban diversity and inclusion, putting diversity scholarships at risk. It would also set rules about what can be taught and discussed in the classroom, banning “controversial” topics such as climate policies, electoral politics, foreign policy, immigration policy, marriage and abortion. In other words, the fascist state would be extended into college classrooms.

How Dismantling the U.S. Department of Education Would Affect Ohio School Districts As Trump continues to talk about dismantling the U.S. Department of Education, Ohio educators are concerned about what that could mean for federal funding that school districts across the state rely on. Ohio school districts, on average, receive about 10% of their revenue from the federal government. And if that is cut, students living in poverty and students with disabilities are the ones who are most at risk of losing the support they need to succeed
Immigration

Who is ICE Putting in Ohio Jails? One County Won’t Say. Based on the legal advice of federal officials, Geauga County jail officials will not release records that detail who is inside its facility awaiting deportation proceedings. But Seneca County jail officials have provided the Marshall Project  – Cleveland with the last six years of monthly ICE invoices. In Seneca County, ICE pays $90 a day per detainee, contributing about $2.2 million toward the sheriff’s $2.8 million budget.
The Chilling Effect of Trump’s Indiscriminate Immigration Arrests & Propaganda At the one month mark of the new Trump administration, it is clear that the president’s thinly veiled  threats of imposing mass deportation on ” criminal immigrants ” are in fact a promise to target all immigrants – and sometimes even U.S. citizens. We have already seen wrongful arrests of people with U.S passports, including a veteran in New Jersey, Native Americans in the Navajo nation and others from Puerto Rico.

Trump’s mass deportation plan hits its own wall Trump’s plan to deport ” millions and millions ”  of undocumented immigrants is meeting reality – already stretching the limits of the government’s resources, less than four weeks into the new administration. A lack of funds, detention space, officers and infrastructure to handle arrested immigrants is frustrating many involved in the effort and has made the goal of one million deportations this year seem unrealistic. Let’s hope they continue to be frustrated.

How Donald Trump’s Immigration Crackdown Threatens U.S. Food Supply As the Trump administration ramps up immigration enforcement, the undocumented farm workers who sustain the $1.53 trillion U.S. agricultural industry – comprising  42% to 50% of the agricultural  workforce – are living in heightened fear of deportation. Farmers and industry specialists fear that once deportations start at the farms there will be severe labor shortages that will disrupt food production and drive up consumer prices.
Black Lives Matter

Trump’s idea of ‘ competence ‘ – only white men need apply It’s not hard to see Trump’s racism in his unrelenting attacks on diversity programs at the start of his second term. And Trump has frequently described immigrants as ” poisoning the blood ” of the nation and he has referred to Black Lives Matter being a hate group. His assault comes despite a pew poll that recently found that a 52 percent majority support diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
