As of November 15 the county’s family shelter system has a waiting list of 47 families, and the rapid re – housing program which seeks to get people or families who are experiencing homelessness into housing or apartments is not accepting referrals. And we’re just at the beginning of winter.
‘ Last resort for the people.’ CSU Law School to open wrongful conviction clinic The clinic will open in January and offer free legal assistance for those incarcerated. While the clinic is accepting cases statewide the biggest need is here in Cuyahoga County. Since 1989 Cuyahoga County has had the most wrongful convictions in the state and the tenth most nationwide. This may be something to keep in mind as we head into next year’s Cuyahoga County Prosecutor election.

And the good news is that this is just the beginning as the initiative is expected to cancel the roughly $181 million owed by 50,000 Clevelanders.

Signature collection for the initiative can now begin again. 413,487 valid signatures need to be collected by July 3, 2024 to get this on next year’s November ballot. CCPC is meeting with the campaign this week and we hope to get this going soon!
The FBI raided a regulator’s home. First Energy said it bribed him with millions. Since then, it has been silent. It was three years ago last week that the FBI raided the home of Sam Randazzo, who would later be named by Gov. No Spine DeWine to chair of PUCO, Ohio’s top utilities regulatory board. The smoking gun the FBI found was texts that detailed a $4.3 million payment from First Energy that they themselves admitted was a bribe. The only thing the FBI is saying is that the investigation is ” ongoing.”
A Coal Company Got a Big Payback From Ohio’s Corrupt HB 6 Bill Since we are celebrating the third anniversary of the raid on Sam Randazzo’s home, let’s also celebrate the third anniversary of the coal subsidies that have yet to be repealed that were passed when corrupt HB 6 was passed. The Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Council estimates coal subsidies have cost ratepayers $221 million since 2020. Something to think about when you pay your next electric bill.
Bill would give tax breaks for centers that try to steer pregnant Ohioans away from abortion There are 175 of these centers in Ohio which are backed by churches and other organizations that oppose abortion, These centers can do pregnancy tests but are not regulated by the state as health care providers, They advertise to draw pregnant women in, then give inaccurate information to deter them from having an abortion. The tax breaks are another example of Republicans ignoring what the voters said on November 7

Scientists sound the alarm as the world smashes through the 2 – degree warming limit for the first time The 2 – degree threshold means that earth’s temperature is 2 degrees warmer than before industrialization. Scientists have been warning for decades that crossing that threshold would have catastrophic and irreversible impacts on the planet and ecosystems. Although the threshold was only crossed briefly last week there is little doubt that it will be permanently crossed soon.
How Many Abortions Did the Post – Roe Bans Prevent? Until now, studies have shown that many women in states with bans have ended their pregnancies anyway, by traveling to other states or ordering pills online. What the studies have been unable to show is how many women have not done so, and carried their pregnancy to term. This new analysis found that in the first six months of this year between one – fourth and one – fifth of all pregnant women living in states with bans did not get an abortion and might have done so if it was available.
Senate Democrats warn Manchin that running for president would risk disaster There are two realities here. Reality number one is that Manchin is an egomaniac and he thoroughly enjoys going on talk shows saying that he might run. And he would thoroughly enjoy running to satisfy his ego regardless of the consequences. Reality number two is that most political experts say that he has no chance of winning and he could easily take votes from Biden and get Trump elected.
The Mind – Bending Politics of RFK Jr.’s Spoiler Campaign On some issues he is very liberal and on other issues he is very conservative. But mostly, as this in depth piece suggests, he is paranoid and has a world view that everything is a conspiracy. And the main issue that animate him either barely exist or don’t exist at all on cable news or the print media. So how is it that some polls have him as high as 20%? The answer might simply be that he is not Trump or Biden.

Federal Court Moves to Drastically Weaken Voting Rights Act The ruling, which is almost certain to be appealed to the Supreme Court, would effectively bar private citizens and civil rights groups from suing under a key provision of the landmark law. If private citizens and civil rights groups cannot sue, who can? And what do you think the Supreme Court will decide?
Using civic data to advance racial equity in Cleveland Provides an interesting take that indiscriminate data collection can’t be the rule when there isn’t racial inequality at the center. And that most data collection that is indiscriminate only reinforces existing stereotypes. One example used is how ShotSpotter has been depicted as a means to lower gun violence. But most data collected on this topic doesn’t show how many innocent Black people have been unnecessarily targeted by the police.
Schools Aren’t Prepared to Handle Racist Bullying Despite making up only 15% of the public school population, Black students were 35% of those who reported being bullied because of their race. And one has to wonder how many more cases are unreported. The problem is worse in predominantly white school districts where Black students often feel marginalized. And even with proper training well intentioned white administrators are often confused as to what to do.
Advocates say candidates need to prioritize Black men in 2024 Only about 43 percent of Black voters are men. ” There’s never been a point where Black men’s issues have been put front and center for any political party in a real way,” said Mondale Robinson, founder of the Black male voting project. Too often, Mondale said, candidates show up to speak to Black men when an election is looming but disappear after the ballots are counted.

Democratic – led cities pay for migrants tickets to other places as resources dwindle Denver alone has spent at least $4.3 million in city funds to send migrants to other U.S. cities, freeing up shelter beds for new arrivals while adding to the numbers in other Democratic – led cities such as Chicago and New York, that are struggling to house asylum – seekers, mostly from Venezuela. The cities say they are buying the tickets for migrants who want to travel and that they are not being coerced to leave.
Solution Badly Needed As Migrants Shuttled Here and There Argues that if left unchecked, this approach to addressing problems could easily extend beyond the area of migrants crossing the southern border to encompass broader social problems such as attempting to export homeless people, drug abusers and even criminals elsewhere. The solution lies in a more coordinated federal approach.before this becomes a societal norm.
Biden plans to deploy immigration officers to Panama to help screen and deport U.S. bound migrants, officials say. Panama is the key transit point for migrants fleeing South America who are hoping to reach the United States to seek asylum. The Department of Homeland Security is sending a team of officials who are experienced with screening asylum seekers. One has to wonder what this screening will look like with Biden seeking reelection and rising immigration numbers being a key campaign issue.
Weak revisions to skilled worker visas do little for U.S. businesses The U.S. economy’s strength is fueled by a constant influx of skilled foreign workers from its top – notch colleges and universities. The H -1B visa was originally designed in 1990 to address the nation’s need for skilled workers. Unfortunately the number of these visas granted has consistently fallen behind the number of skilled workers needed. And today with a 3.9% unemployment rate there is an acute shortage of skilled workers.
